A RESOLUTION AMENDING THE SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO
EMPLOYEE CLASSIFICATION PLAN FOR THE POSITIONS
OF BUILDING INSPECTOR, CODE ENFORCEMENT OFFICER,
AND LEAD BUILDING MAINTENANCE CUSTODIAN
WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 4.03 of the City of South San
Frarcisco's Personnel Rules and Regulations a classification
stucy and salary survey were conducted for the positions of
Building Inspector, Code Enforcement Officer and Lead Building
Mairtenance Custodian; and
WHEREAS, based on the results of this study, as well as an
assessment of salary relationships to other classified positions
within the City, it is proper to adjust the salary ranges of
these positions.
BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of South San
Frarcisco that the Employee Classification Plan, as amended, is
further amended effective July 1, 1987 as follows:
1. The salary for Building Inspector is increased to a range of
$2,595 - $3,156 per month.
2. The salary for Code Enforcement Officer is increased to a
range of $2,595 - $3,156 per month.
The class specification for Lead Building Maintenance
Custodian is revised as set forth in Exhibit "A" and the
salary is increased to a range of $1,921 - $2,337 per month.

LEAD BUILDING MAINTENANCE CUSTODIAN
DEFINITION
Positions in the classification of Lead Building Maintenance
Custodian perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in
the cleaning and maintenance of City buildings. Work is
performed under the general supervision of the Superintendent of
Facilities Maintenance. Incumbents will provide lead direction
to Custodians in lower-level classifications.
DISTINGUISHING C~ARACTERISTICS
The Lead Building Maintenance Custodian is the highest
classification in the Building Maintenance Custodian series.
This class is distinguished from the next lower level of Senior
Building Maintenance Custodian in that incumbents regularly
provide lead direction to the Custodian positions and are
assigned substantial amounts of building maintenance tasks.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
(The duties listed below represent examples of work performed and
are not all-inclusive of duties which are or may be assigned this
classification.)
Lead Building Maintenance Custodian positions perform any of the
duties set forth in the class specifications for Senior Building
Maintenance Custodian and Building Maintenance Custodian. In
addition, they:
Oversee the maintenance of assigned buildings and
facilities.
Assist in the preparation of work schedules, provide input
regarding personnel matters and maintain records as
necessary.
- Provide training in work techniques and safety.
Perform the more difficult types of building repairs not
recuiring a journey-level trades background, and service and
maintain janitorial equipment such as vacuums and buffers.

Receive stores, issue stock and provide inventory control in
the operation of a central stores unit for janitorial and
related supplies.
Purchase supplies and equipment within established
procedures and limits.
Maintain and set up recording and related equipment for City
Council, commission and other meetings being held in City
buildings; may provide for the distribution of City
documents such as council agendas.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Methods, materials and equipment used in the
janitorial maintenance of public buildings and
facilities; some knowledge of building trades in
the areas of plumbing, electrical, carpentry and
painting; basic principles of supervision; and
safe work practices.
Ability to:
Education and
Experience:
Driver's
License:
Effectively and safely perform building
maintenance tasks not requiring journey-level
skill in any trade; maintain proper standards of
cleanliness in assigned areas; work
independently; perform physical labor, including
periodic heavy labor; effectively direct the work
of other personnel; follow written and verbal
instructions; work extended or irregular hours;
maintain basic records; and work effectively with
other personnel and with the public.
Sufficient education and experience to
satisfactorily perform the duties of this
classification. A typical qualifying background
would be the completion of the tenth grade and
three years' experience in janitorial work and
basic building maintenance.
Possession of a valid, appropriate State of
California Driver's License.
