HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 108-1987RESOLUTION N0.108-87 CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE NATIONAL CAMPAIGN TO ENCOURAGE CHILDREN TO OBTAIN LIBRARY CARDS WHEREAS, 1987 has been designated the "Year of the Reader"; and WHEREAS, U. S. Secretary of Education, William J. Bennett, has stated in First Lessons: A Report on Elementary Education in America, 1986, that "Every school should have a library, and every child should have and use a public library card"; and WHEREAS, Secretary Bennett has further called for the initiation of a national campaign to ensure that every child obtain a library card by the end of the 1986-87 school year; and WHEREAS, use of the school and public libraries begun in childhood, becomes a lifelong habit and resource, providing for the fulfillment of Secretary 3ennett's words that "Education is a continuum lasting a lifetime"; and WHEREAS, the Nation's public libraries have long advocated the early introduction of children to their resources by means of a library card issued in the child's own name; and WHEREAS, the Council of the American Library Association during its Mid- winter 1987 meeting determined to actively pursue a campaign to ensure that every child obtains and uses a library card by the end of the 1987-88 school year. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of South San Francisco it supports the American Library Association's campaign and encourages California public libraries and school districts to implement this campaign ir their respective agencies. I hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was regularly introduced and adoptec by the City Council of the City of South San Francisco at a regul ar meeting held on the 23rd day of September , 198 7 , by the following vote: AYES: C~uncilmembers John "Jack" Drago, Richard A.
