CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA
A RESOLUTION COMMENDING JOSEPH N. FIGUEIREDO
WHEREAS, JOSEPH FIGUEIREDO, after faithfully serving the City for approximately
sixteen (16) years, retired on July 30, 1987; and
WHEREAS, Joe was employed by the City on November 16, 1971 as an Accountant
in the Finance Department, on April 20, 1973 became a Staff and Budget Analyst
and shortly thereafter served as Acting Finance Officer; and
WHEREAS, his ambitions and capabilities caused him to become, as of
January 1, 1974, South San Francisco's first Purchasing Officer with responsibi-
lity for the entire purchasing operation, and in 1979 the City's Property Manager,
with responsibility for all real property management and the administration of
insurance for the City of South San Francisco, as well as being the first Notary
Public in City Hall; and
WHEREAS, from November, 1986 until February, 1987 he held the position of
Interim Finance Director; and
WHEREAS, Joe attended college in Sydney, Australia achieving first place in
the Commonwealth examinations and furthered his education by attending Golden Gate
University, graduating with a Bachelor in Business Administration degree; and
WHEREAS, while in Australia, Joe met and married Amy, and they now have two
lovely daughters, Michelle and Nancy; and
WHEREAS, he served in the U.S. Navy as a Chief Petty Officer, the ships'
port being Reykjavik, Iceland, and at the outbreak of World War II was ordered
to the Pacific Area and was wounded when his ship was torpedoed in the invasion
of Guadalcanal; and
WHEREAS, Joe was decorated with the Purple Heart Meda~l, five bronze stars
for action in the Asiatic-Pacific war zone, and received the U.S. Navy Good
Conduct Medal and as an active member in the Disabled American Veterans he served
a stint as Commander of the William Randolph Hearst Chapter in San Francisco; and
WHEREAS, while Joe is enjoying his daily swimming, exercising and traveling,
he will be missed by all of his friends in the City of South San Francisco.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of South
San Francisco that it does hereby express appreciation to Joseph N. Figueiredo
for his dedicated services to the City of South San Francisco and does order this
Resolution incorporated in the official records of the City as this Council's
expression of appreciation and its wishes for his long and happy retirement.
I hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was regularly introduced
and adopted by the City Council of the City of South San Francisco at a
