Haffey, ia Revised April 1986 1 of 4 City of South San Francisco Class Specification DEFINITION PARAMEDIC/FIREFi[GHTER Under general supervision to perform Mobile Intensive Care Paramedic Services and to engage in fire fighting, medical aid and all other suppression and prevention activities in protecting life and property; to drive, operate and maintain all fire department apparatus and equipment; to assist and participate in training programs, to participate in inspections and related fire prevention and public education activities; and to do related work as required. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This classification encompasses the duties in addition to performing Paramedic. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES full range of Firefighter as a Mobile Intensive Care Responds to fire alarms, emergency medical calls, emergency rescues; public service calls, or other alarms which necessitate the mitigating of a situation which threatens life or property; drives and locates equipment in the proper place at scene; effects rescues; lays hose lines and operates apparatus pumps and aerial apparatus; attacks fires and directs fire streams; applies Basic Life Support techniques; sets up intravenous solutions, takes blood pressures; assists in the connecting of telemetry equipment; assists in the emergency transporting of patients; operates communications equipment; performs a variety of routine maintenance and repair tasks, including the inspection and minor repair of equipment; participates in inspections and related fire prevention duties; cleans stations, quarters and equipment and maintains a clean and orderly condition in and about the station; studies and reviews fire department rules and regulations, fire hazards, and fire fighting techniques; participates in drills, training sessions, and exercises; may be assigned to prepare various reports, may be required to respond to alarms during the non-duty hours when on-duty staff needs to be augmented; meets the public and deals with various officials and citizens in Revised April 1986 2 of 4 PARAMEDIC/FIREF2GHTER furthering the public relations of :he department; conducts and participates in public education programs; as assigned serves as Acting Captain and performs assigned related duties. In addition, as a Paramedic, attends to victims in emergency medical situations using prescriDed paramedic techniques; provides medical aid, administers drugs, gives injections, starts intravenous solutions, takes and monitors vital signs and takes appropriate action to preserve life as prescribed by standing orders, a doctor or registered nurse via direct radio or telephone contact; drives department ambulance and transports emergency patients; operates radio, telemetry and related medical electronic equipment for monitoring and treatment of emergency medical victims, records company activities and prepares reports, participates in training and activities with the Fire Department, hospitals and other agencies; studies and reviews local, county, state and departmental paramedic rules, regulations and ordinances; teaches paramedic and EMT skills and techniques to members of the Fire Department, other agencies and the public. LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES Possession issued by required, license. of a valid California Class III operator's license the State Department of Motor Vehicles. May be after employment to obtain a Class II or Class I Graduation from a paramedic training course that meets the requirements for certification in San Mateo County. Certification by the County of San Mateo is required prior to appointment. ALL LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS MUST BE MAINTAINED AS A CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT. QUALIFICATIONS Ability to: Learn the operations, use and maintenance of modern paramedic equipment and techniq'~es; PARAMEDIC/FIREF[ ~GHTER Revised April 1986 3 of 4 Learn local, county, State and department rules, regulations and ordinances governing the paramedic activities; Comfort and deal effectively wi~h distraught victims and families; Learn fire fighting methods and ~echniques, the basic operation and mechanics of fire fighting equipment, streets and locations and the location of hydrants, mains and major traffic and fire hazards; Learn to drive and operate pumpers, trucks, ambulance and aerial apparatus with care and ~afety in accordance with traffic laws and ordinances; Maintain proficiency in Life Support techniques; Analyze emergency situations and adopt effective action; I Communicate clearly and effectively; courses of Think and act quickly in emergencies; Understand and carry out orders given in person, by radio, telephone or in writing. Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with employees, supervisors and the public. Learn and effectively apply city and state fire codes and associated laws. and EXPERIENCE: None required. Experience as a paramedic is preferred. EDUCATION: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade. Desirable supplemental education would be successful completion of courses in Fire Science. PARAMEDIC/FIREFIGHTER Revised April 1986 4 of 4 AGE: Must be a minimum of age 21 at the time of the examination and appointment. MEDICAL AND PERFORMANCE STANDARDS: Prior to appointment must pass job related medical, psychological and physical performance evaluations. May be required after employment to pass periodic medical and physical performance tests and to participate in an ongoing physical fitness program.
