HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 100-1985 RESOLUTION NOJ 100-85 CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING AN APPLICATION FOR A LITERACY GRANT PURSUANT TO THE CALIFORNIA LIBRARY SERVICES BOARD LITERACY CAMPAIGN (EDUCATION CODE SECTION 18730) WHEREAS, the State of California is estimated to have at least 2.5 million adults over age 16 who cannot read and write English well enough to meet their own personal living requirements; and WHEREAS, illiteracy is defined by the California Literacy Campaign as the lack of reading and writing skills in English needed to handle the minimal demands of daily living; and WHEREAS, local public libraries with an established program have been invited by the California Library Services Board to submit program budget requests and grant applications to continue literacy services in local communities from July 1, 1985 to June 30, 1986; and WHEREAS, the City Librarian, in conjunction with the city library of the City of Daly City, has developed a program for library literacy services to be conducted cooperatively between the two cities; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of South San Francisco that: 1. The City Librarian is hereby authorized to make application for a one (1) year grant from the California Library Services Board in the amount of One Hundred Seventeen Thousand Four Hundred Dollars ($117,400.00) to continue a program to teach English speaking adults in Northern San Mateo County (specifically in the cities of Daly City and South San Francisco) how to read. I hereby certify that the foregoing Resolution was regularly introduced and adopted by the City Council of the City of South San Francisco at a regular meeting held on the 22nd day of May , 19 85 , by the following vote: AYES: Councilmembers Mark N.
