Then one day my lucky star helped me and I real- ly could go to America. But when I arrived at the small town of South San Francisco I felt a little funny because the "country of my dream" had consisted of New York, Boston, San Francis- co, Niagara Falls and the White House, and not pretty houses smelling like cherry-pie, with blossoming gardens, hot dogs and cokes, and sensi- tive people. But I liked it from the very first moment and since my lucky star was still looking after me, I got a new school, dear new friends, new teach- ers and a wonderful new family, a great Daddy who liked to talk and argue with me for hours, a very charming and sweet Mom who could under- stand all your problems, and the nicest and prettiest sister in the world. My schooll Two words bringing back so many memoriesl I am thinking now of rallies, P.A.C., I.F.C. meetings, football games, economics and government and speech classes, of the long lines to get lunch and of the finals, of gym showers, library work, and still hundreds of things more which will be everlasting memories in my heart. But, the year passed as fast as ever. Then Monday, June 22, came. This date doesn't mean anything to you, but I sure hate to re- call it. On that morning I left South San Francisco, I wanted to have one last tour through my American hometown. The school was silent and deserted and I had the crazy idea that it would remain closed forever because I was leaving. That was the day of useless regret, too sad good-byes, and much pain and fear. Then came the long, exciting trip through the States with stops at the World's Fair, St. Louis, Washington, Philadelphia. I got to the White House and met the President and Senator Robert Kennedy came to speak to us at the Armory. Famous places, famOus peoplel But after hav- ing crossed ten States and seen many important amd beautiful things, I finally realized why I wasn't so excited as in my dream of little girl's days. I was missing you, each one of you. I was missing South San Francisco, a small town which I didn't even know of before my AFS experience, the people that accepted me, with my funny accent and my different tastes, my fears and my smile, as one of them, people who loved me and that I truly love. This is what I tell my friends when they ask me of America. I tell them of South San Francis- co because my America is all there. I tell them of you, you who helped me to make this story, to realize my dream. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, for letting me under- stand and know the TRUE and GREAT America~ Angela Pinti A.F.S.
