CITY COUNCIL, CITY OF SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, STATE OF CALIFORNIA
A RESOLUTION IN MEMORY OF
MARINE LANCE CORPORAL MICHAEL BIANCHINI
BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of
South San Francisco that:
WHEREAS, Marine Lance Corporal Michael Bianchini
was killed in action, in Vietnam, near the City of Quang
Nai, on March 5, 1966, when and where a force of five
thousand Marines and South Vietnamese Paratroopers met
and destroyed half of the North Vietnamese Army's 36th
Division in Operation Utah, and
WHEREAS, he did distinguish himself and the Corps
through which he served his country in previous actions,
particularly operation "Light Star" near Chu Lai in
August of 1965, his actions being described as follows
by Major General A. R. Kier, Acting Commanding General,
U.S. Marines:
Pinned down with men in his platoon under
intense mortar fire, Corporal Bianchini
suffered a head wound, but refused aid,
crawled across shell-swept terrain to a
position where he could deliver effective
fire on the enemy. Only after he had run
out of ammunition, and only after enemy
fire had ceased, did Bianchini agree to
accept medical aid for himself.
WHEREAS, he was awarded the Purple Heart, the right
to wear the Combat V for heroic action, and the Bronze
Star for heroic achievement under fire, and
WHEREAS, the members of the City Council share with
his family and friends the sorrow caused by his loss and
are moved to deep respect and admiration for his actions
which were in keeping with the tradition of the United
States Marine Corps.
NOW, THEREFORE,
The members of the City Council respectfully
share with the family and friends of Michael Bianchini
the sorrow caused by his loss.
The members of the City Council express to the
family and friends of Michael Bianchini respect and
admiration for his service to his country through the
United States Marine Corps, given in keeping with the
highest traditions of that corps - a breed "whose
blood line has remained without taint or blemish".
The members of the City Council do hereby re-
cord in the official records of the City as a tri-
bute to Marine Lance Corporal Michael Bianchini,
and the United States Marine Corps, this Resolution
and the Epilogue from "The New Breed" by Andrew
Geer, which describes the Marine breed as follows:
EPILOGUE
"One of the fine unit histories written
after World War II was titled 'The Old Breed'.
It was an account of the 1st Marine Division
in the Pacific. 'The New Breed' is about the
same division, but few of the same people.
George McMillan, the author of 'The Old
Breed', wrote of Marines who had fought in a
dozen small wars and one or two large ones.
He wrote of Marines who fitted Colonel John
Thompson's description: 'a number of diverse
people who ran curiously to type, with drilled
shoulders and a bone-deep sunburn, and a toler-
ant scorn of nearly everything on earth. They
were the Leathernecks, the old breed of American
regular, regarding the service as home and war
an occupation, and they transmitted their temper
and character and viewpoint to the high-hearted
volunteer mass.'
The new breed of Marine no longer answers
to this description. The uniformity of Size is
no longer there, nor do they have the length of
professional military training. There are a few
of the old breed left, very few. Most of the old
ones were buried at Guadalcanal, Pelelieu or Oki-
nawa. There is a similarity, however, between
the old and the new - the will to win and curses
on the man or unit who lacks it; the moral stamina
to stand and fight when all seems lost; the cour-
age to charge a hill when death warns to stay.
Somehow the blood line has remained without taint
or blemish."

Mrs. Joseph Bianchini, 701 Newman Drive, South
